How to Reverse Menopausal Weight Gain and Lose Weight Fast
After menopause I started to gain weight. Steadily…and I feared it was never going to stop. My new joke to my friends was “Ever since I turned 50, it seems like I can look at food and gain weight.” I said this humorously, but it seemed true…
At first I blamed my life on depression, growing older, stressful marriage, the loss of my interior decorating business and my children growing up and going away to college .
But as I watched week by week, that last digit on the scale was ever-inching up. But when the second digit was also rising , I became concerned but really other things I was more concerned about . What’s the point and why does it matter?
I had put on about 40 pounds in three years.
And then I had an “aha” moment although it was not pleasant , it woke me up … And I realized I must do something ! Here is what happened …
On Labor Day weekend 2013, my family and a few friends celebrated at our home by riding horses, cooking out, and playing games outdoors. Everything was going great until I tried to mount my horse and I could not pull myself up . It was so embarrassing … My mother in law at 73 bounced up on the horse and rode for miles and here I was half her age and could not even get on the horse !
This was the day that is forever etched in my memory and unfortunately saved forever in a photo … (Thanks to my mother in law )
It is a reminder for me even today how unhappy I was and how I had become someone I did not recognize. This was a pivotal point … Do I keep going in this unhealthy and unhappy direction or do I find a better way?
So I put on my little research hat and decided to investigate how in the heck I could be gaining weight. And guess what I found out?
It turns out the number one question asked of doctors about menopause is “Why is it that the older I am, the more I exercise, and the less I eat, the fatter I get?”
The answer is hormone loss.
Around the time of menopause and most definitely during and after it, our hormones start vanishing and eventually become so depleted this wreaks havoc on a system once prepared for baby-making.
This new lack of hormones in our bodies causes us to experience all the metabolism and fat-gaining problems that we witness in our 40, 50s, and beyond. Among them are that we more easily convert calories into fat, we store fat more than in the past, our metabolism slows down, and we lose precious muscle-mass over the years with all of its fat-burning powers.
No wonder I’m heavy, you’re thinking! But hold on . . .
THERE IS A SOLUTION.

The Menopause Blues
So why do we gain so much weight due to menopause?
If you’ve heard of Low Testosterone in men, which causes big bellies, low energy, weight gain, and a lack of sexual desire (sound familiar, ladies?), then understand that we have low E, low P and Low T (low estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone).
Since we no longer need those hormones to get pregnant flowing through our systems, our body stops producing them (nearly), and this new lack of hormones causes havoc in the aging body in all kinds of ways.
Low testosterone in women causes the brain fog, forgetfulness, and lack of physical energy we notice after menopause.
The Major Reasons Behind Weight Gain After 40
Some women can maintain a relatively thin appearance throughout life and then they hit 43 or 44 and BAM—it’s like your shape has shifted, and the new shape is not so graceful as you had imagined – I always had this idea that at 50ish I would still be active … playing tennis, shopping, doing lunch with my girlfriends, going on dates with my hubby and traveling to see my daughter in Chicago … And definitely living a full, exciting life !
So far it was quite the opposite…fat, tired, going nowhere !
All Menopausal Women Fight The Pounds
Although most women gain somewhere around 10-15 pounds during and after menopause, I gained more like 30 pounds, ballooning up from a size 8 to a size 16. My weight went from 145to 185. The difference is, it wouldn’t come back off this time no matter how hard I tried – and my cravings were out of control. I ate even when I was not hungry. I think that is called emotional eating … And I was becoming a pro at eating!
But, I learned it’s not just me. In fact, 40% of women ages 40-59 are not just overweight, they are obese.
There are four major reasons for weight gain after metabolism
(1) our metabolism really slows after age fifty
(2) Low hormone levels contribute to our basal metabolic rate really slowing down
(3) Low hormones contribute to our storing fat around the middle
(4) We lose muscle as we age, and fat on the body attracts and stores more fat.
(5) Cortisol causes us to gain weight and keep it, especially around our middle.
(6) Night-sweats and sleep disturbances caused by menopause throw our cortisol really out of whack, further contributing to fat storage around the middle.
“In native cultures menopause tends to be a cause for quiet celebration, a time when a woman has completed her childbearing years and is moving into a deeper level of self-discovery and spiritual awareness. She is becoming a wise old woman. In these cultures menopausal women are looked up to and revered. They are sought out for advice and their opinions are heavily weighed in the decision-making process of the community.”
–John Lee What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause (menopausal weight gain)
Too bad America is not more like this. But this quote comforts me. I like thinking of this time in my life as a new journey. And mine certainly has become one. But I’m getting ahead of myself. Back to explaining hormones.
If We Thought Our Periods Were A Drag . . .
First, let’s talk about how depletion of hormones impacts our weight. Remember the bloating and weight gain you used to experience as you approached your period, while afterward losing weight became easy again? Well, it’s kind of like we are staying in a “pre-period” state. We aren’t shedding our uterine lining, telling our body to begin producing hormones again to help us to achieve pregnancy.
Estrogen, Progesterone, and Testosterone—They’re Gone Baby Gone
After menopause, our hormones get all out of whack and these are ones that are directly tied to our metabolism –estrogen and testosterone (yes, women suffer from low T too!). Christine Gerbstadt, MD explains, “There’s a huge hormonal change that occurs around [the age of 50], particularly a decrease in estrogen and progesterone. . . with every passing year at this age—and it’s much more significant in the 60s and 70s—there’s a decrease in the basal metabolic rate or the energy required to maintain body weight.”
Overall, this lack of estrogen causes the body to use starches and blood sugar less effectively, which increases our storage of fat, which makes us gain and retain weight. And reduced estrogen also slows our metabolism like crazy, meaning have to really lower our calorie intake to not gain weight. Lower estrogen has also shown to contribute to less physical activity and increased hunger and cravings.
Overall, the havoc hormone loss plays with our systems makes losing weight practically impossible. Most women give up when dieting and exercising because the weight comes off at such a slow crawl, you need a really accurate scale to notice the ounce-by-ounce (not pound by pound) loss.
Metabolisms Begin Slowing at 25? Yes, 25!
Besides slowing from a lack of estrogen, our metabolism slows with age as well, really compounding our problems. This slowing begins at age 25 and continues to slow with every passing year. As Dr. Dr. Nanette Santoro explains, “The metabolic rate slows with age. This means that a woman eating the exact same number of calories a day will maintain her weight at age 20 but will gain weight at age 50. Add menopause to this, and for some women, it’s the perfect storm.”
Muscle Loss and Fat Gain
Furthermore complicating the problem for women 50+ is that as we age, our bodies begin losing muscle and gaining more fat. Plus, if you’ve been going to school and then working hard, like millions of American women, you may have had to prioritize working over working out. I know I did. So combine this muscle loss from the severe decrease in muscle mass we experience with menopause, and you have weight-loss fission.
And the more fat and fat cells we accumulate, the more our body wants more fat for its stores. As Dr. David Ludvig, notes “We gain weight because our fat cells are over-stimulated, causing them to suck in and store too many calories.” Overall, the way that hormone loss affects our fat storage process, metabolic rate, and other delicate systems is both fascinating and depressing. Just listen to how OB/GYN, Marcelle Pick, explains the reason we gain so much weight during menopause:
“Scientists have discovered that fat cells actually have special receptors for the stress hormone cortisol, and there are more of these receptors in our abdominal fat cells than anywhere else in our bodies! In addition, scientists have shown that belly fat is actually an active tissue, acting as an endocrine organ that responds to the stress response by actually welcoming more fat to be deposited!”
My Menopausal Weight Gain
My metabolism is so sluggish that often after a day of dieting and exercising, I’ll step on the scale only to have gained a half a pound to a pound and a half—maddening!
Let me give you an example of how hard menopause makes losing weight and keeping it off. I had been being good for four weeks and had reduced my weight by a whopping 9 pounds. I stared feeling tired, probably from a lack of lean proteins (beans, chicken) and healthier carbs, and took a “bread/light carb” a break for even two days and splurge a little the two to three pounds I gain take forever to lose, even with diet an exercise.
I walked twice a day about 30 minutes each and stuck with mostly egg white omelets and salads and lost only .2 ounces a day. So it took 2 and a half weeks to lose that 2 to 3 pounds I gained. NOT FAIR. Plus the extra weight 40 lbs I carried around hurt feet all the time and it was so depressing not to see any progress! I mean, it took everything I had not to give up!
And I thought, there has to be a way out of this constant loop of doom and feeling and looking awful.
. . . And Then A Light Began to Dawn
So I began looking into herbs to increase the metabolism, such as green tea, green coffee, caffeine, guarana, garcina, and forskolin and some others I had been researching.
And I found all of them in one supplement—Thrive.
And I finally began to see results – almost immediately.
Thrive is a Life Saver For All Things Menopause, Metabolism, and Fat Burning. Menopausal weight gain be gone!
In a few words, Thrive has changed my life. How? All kinds of ways.

It gets you off the couch and living again, period. Who wants to feel like a kid again? ME! And that’s what Thrive does for me.
Instead of sleeping, watching tv and reading books, i am out living my life …having more fun than ever ! Ever day is different ! All my behaviors began to change. Instead of parking by the door when shopping, I began parking as far away as possible. More calorie burning. More fat burning.
I lunched with girls and chose healthier meals … And shopping was way more fun because guess what … I lost – wait for it – 20 pounds in six months.
I have gone from a size 18 to an 10 and I feel fabulous. So fabulous that I had to share this with every woman out there who thinks they can never lose weight after menopause or for every woman out there for whom losing weight seems an impossible task.
Why Does Thrive Work? Because of It’s Special Formula Designed for Women and Menopausal Weight Gain
See, I was interested in the ingredients in this supplement before I even heard of Thrive.
I had been researching herbs and supplements that work to:
• Regulate hormones
• Speed metabolism
• Help regulate insulin
• Help us with cortisol regulation to stop converting everything to fat
• Help with brain fog and mental clarity
And Thrive had it all in a pill, a patch and a powder.
So I looked into Thrive and decided to try the 8 Week Experience
I took the Thrive Women’s pill every day, then 20 minutes later I drank the powder mixed in water (not a meal replacement… It cleans out the gut) and then popped the DFT patch on. And I still eat breakfast ! (The derma fusion technology patches are amazing! this is going to be a big thing in weight loss, ladies, you’ll see)
Soon I experienced a whole new lust for life and health like I have never experienced. What is really crazy is that I began feeling better. I was happy just being me again! And then my body started shifting into a new and improved version of me and I liked it!
And all these things came naturally …the advanced fat burning properties of the products, weight loss came daily- not weekly. I mean, I stopped looking at the scales and was watching my clothes fit me again and some of my clothes actually too big !!! I was so excited and I still am … three years later !
What is In Thrive that Contributes to Fast Weight Loss? I’ll Tell You
The researchers behind Thrive at Le-Vel really did their research. And if you research these ingredients yourself, you’ll see that.
Just look at this powerhouse combination of fat-burning, metabolism increasing, hormone regulating ingredients in Thrive. Read what they do by themselves, then imagine them working together to fight menopausal weight gain.
Listen up ladies, we’re going to be hearing a lot about CoQ10 in the future. CoQ10 has proven affects of boosting metabolism and burning fat because, as the authors at Livestrong tells us “it helps form adenosine triphosphate, also known as ATP, in your body. ATP is the form of energy you get from carbohydrates and fat for use by your cells.”
Forskolin works to activates cellular adenylate cyclase, stimulating hormones which activate desired fat burning mechanisms within the body
Green Coffee Bean Extract
Contains caffeine which boosts your metabolism from 3-11%. The really active ingredient is chlorogenic acid which has shown to lower blood sugar and insulin spikes (very good to prevent insulin resistance and its mammoth weight gain properties), and also can reduce the fat absorbed from foods, reduce fat stored in the liver and improve the function of the fat-burning adiponectin (which is very good for menopausal women).
Contains fat burning metabolism boosting caffeine plus its most important ingredients catechins, one of which is EGCG (Epigallocatechin gallate), a substance that can boost metabolism, and, most importantly for us, it boosts the fat burning process by inhibiting an enzyme that breaks down the hormone norepinephrine. As Authority Nutrition tells us When this enzyme is inhibited, the amount of norepinephrine increases, which signals our fat cells to break down fat. Caffeine and ECGC also have a synergistic effect which releases fat into the bloodstream, away from fat cells, and makes it available for use for energy instead—such as for building muscle.
White Tea Extract
White tea, like Green Tea contains catechins. In white tea these inhibit adipogenesis, the development of fat cells, while simultaneously stimulating the fat burning process throughout the body.
Which contains hydroxycitric acid (HCA) for appetite suppression, weight loss, speeding the metabolism, Enough said, right?
After years of fighting my menopausal weight gain slowed system, I finally reached out and tried something. And it has changed my life.
Just try Thrive and you’ll feel the energy-boosting, metabolism revving properties of this supplement immediately.
And get your life back and starting with your health … And smile for a change!!! Say “Yes” to your life and take action. I want every woman that is going through menopausal weight gain to have a solution. To have hope!
Can’t wait to talk with you!
